Tychicus – a ‘somebody’ in God’s service

In the Acts of the Apostles and in Paul’s letters, we read of many minor characters who appear, with and around Paul, and who support him. None of us will ever be a ‘Paul’. Although we may think of ourselves as a ‘nobody’, in God’s purposes we are all a ‘somebody’ to be used by God. Our unassuming lives can be used by God to accomplish His great purposes.
Tychicus is one of these characters. We find him accompanying Paul on his way to Jerusalem, Acts 20:4. He is thought to be taking his church’s collection to those in Jerusalem, as described in 1 Corinthians16:1-4. He would be a trusted and conscientious person. When given a job to do, he did it and beyond. For in Timothy 4:12, we read that Paul had sent him to Ephesus. He would have gone as Paul’s representative. Ephesians 6:21 and 22 tells us he went with Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. In Colossians 4:7 we find he also delivered Paul’s letter to the Colossian church. Tychicus would never have dreamt that two thousand years later, we would be benefiting from Paul’s letters, some of which had been entrusted to him! He was faithful in what he was given to do, to God’s glory.
